An off-grid Victron solution for critical GNSS infrastructure
Reliable RTK and GNSS correction services depend on one non-negotiable requirement: continuous power availability. Any interruption, even brief, can compromise positioning accuracy and service reliability for downstream users.
Energy Freedom was approached by Hitechniques, specialists in high-precision positioning and GNSS correction services, to design and install a fully autonomous off-grid power system supporting RTK infrastructure at a community water scheme in a well-exposed rural location.
The objective was simple but demanding:
guaranteed year-round uptime with zero grid dependency — including through winter conditions.
Built for Infrastructure, Not DIY
This installation was engineered as critical infrastructure, not a typical small solar setup.
The system is based on a Victron Energy ecosystem, selected for its reliability, advanced monitoring, and suitability for long-term unattended operation.
All components — battery storage, charge control, monitoring, and protection — were installed inside a sealed stainless-steel enclosure, providing environmental protection, thermal stability, and long service life.
The PV array consists of two high-output panels mounted using a professional Esdec solution, ensuring structural integrity and optimal exposure in an open, wind-exposed location.
Proven Winter Performance
What truly sets this system apart is its real-world performance.
Throughout the winter period, the battery state of charge remained consistently between 96.5% and 100%, with no outages and no requirement for corrective site visits.
This demonstrates that when designed correctly, off-grid solar can deliver effectively continuous power availability for low-load but mission-critical RTK infrastructure — even during the darkest months of the year.
